GLEMSFORD WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © 2003 Martin Edwards
additional information Margaret King

This memorial is on the main road through Glemsford village. Steve Clarke has researched the 1901 census for details of those listed here and these findings can be found on his web pages. In 1920 March 12th there was a dedication service for the War Memorial led by the archdeacon, George Hodges. This was probably a temporary structure because an offertory of £3-8-11/2 was raised towards funds. The first Armistice Day (mentioned as Armistice Day) was November 11th 1921. On November 5th 1922 at 10.45a.m., Armistice Day, there was an open-air service on Tye Green, Glemsford conducted by the Rev. Joseph Everett (from the Ebenezer Chapel) and the Rev. Banks-Williams (St. Mary's Church). At 7.30p.m. at the end of the church's evening service, there was a dedication of the War Memorial erected by the Ancient Order of Foresters, held at the Council School. This is reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press on November 16th 1922, so it is probable that Nov. 5th 1922 is the actual dedication date.

Glemsford War Casualty

Sapper William George Oakley, R.E.. has been reported killed in action in the Middle East. He was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Oakley, of Angel Lane, Glemsford, and was a member the Football Club, also of the Lads' Club. He worked for some time in Sudbury, with Messrs. Stephen Walters. He was just twenty-one, his birthday being last month. He was much liked by all who knew him and was a good son. Much sympathy fell for his parents.

This is the third son Mrs Oakley has lost, two sons by a former marriage being killed in the last war.
