On 21 February 1902 he was admitted to Derby Railway Servants' Orphanage; he was eligble as his father had been a Fireman with the Great Eastern Railway and had been runover and killed 25 August 1895; he was discharged 18 January 1909. DCM, MM and Bar (MM gazetted 23 August 1916; Bar 18 June 1917; DCM 26 January 1918. DCM – Posthumous - For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He worked continuously for four days and nights during the operations maintaining communication with four battalions in the line. The wires were continually cut, and 110 remained in the open under very heavy fire repairing breakages and keeping up communication. He showed great coolness and skill. MM Bar awarded for work done during the operations from 9 April 1917 to 1 May 1917 by the Corps and Divisional Commanders.
