CULLERCOATS WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 Detailed Information
Compiled and copyright © Gill Cannell and Andrew Dishman 2026
additional informationm Martin Edwards

The memorial stands outside St George's Church, 1, Beverley Gardens, Cullercoats, North Tyneside, Tyne and Wear. It takes the form of a Calvary Cross standing on two plinths that are surmounted by a tapering shaft and gabled crucifix with Christ upon it. A bronze plaque on the face of the lowest plinth bears names, in three columns and in raised lettering. The commemoration is carved into the face of the upper plinth. There are 83 names commemorated and these are replicated within the church on a Wall-mounted, wooden triptych with triangular header. In 1989 an appeal was launched to restore the memorial as the names were fading and a cast bronze plaque with the names was placed over the original inscription. Unfortunately the replacement plaque was stolen in 2010 but replaced. The original memorial was unveiled 14 June 1921 by Lord Armstrong and then rededicated 11 November 1989.
