LYTHE WAR MEMORIAL

There are three memorials in Lythe, all in and around St. Oswald's Parish Church, Lythe Bank, Lythe, Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The first is an external memorial in the form of a closed lantern depicting Christ crucified surmounting an octagonal column which in turn is set on a square-set stone plinth with the inscription on the plinth. There are 17 names listed for World War 1 only. The memorial was rededicated on 10 Otober 2011 by the Archbishop of York Dr. John Sentamu. The other two memorials are to be found within the church and both are in the form of wall mounted brass plaques, one for World War 1 and the other for World War 2.

ATKINSON	Henry	Private 26455. 7th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. Killed in action 1st July 1916. Born Lythe, enlisted Saltburn and resident Moorsholm, Yorks. Buried in Fricourt British Cemetery. Grave lost. Special Memorial. Row A. Grave 7.
BRETT	Charles George	Driver 107549. 527th Battery, 56th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action 3rd September 1918, aged 21 years. Son of (the late) Frederick Charles and Elizabeth Brett of The Cottage, Lythe, Yorks. Born Lythe, Yorks and enlisted Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland. Buried in Queant Road Cemetery, Buissy. CORBETT	Charles William	Gunner 40450. 23rd Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died of wounds 10th November 1917, aged 25 years. Son of Joseph and Jessie W F Corbett of The Gardens, Mulgrave Castle, Whitby, Yorks. Born Whitby, enlisted York and resident Whitby, Yorks. Buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. Plot XXII. COWEN	Henry	Henry Cowens on records. Private 44710. 10th Battalion, Essex Regiment. Died of wounds 25th October 1918, aged 19 years. Son of Thomas and Margaret Cowens of Lythe, Yorks. Born Lythe, enlisted Whitby and resident Lythe, Yorks. Buried in Premont British Cemetery. Plot I. Row D. Grave 1.
DIXON	Thomas	Private 34195. 8th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment, formerly 12872 Yorkshire Regiment. Killed in action 7th October 1916, aged 23 years. Son of (John and Hannah Dixon of Woodmans Cottage, Lythe, Yorks. Born Lythe and enlisted Whitby, Yorks. No known grave. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 14A and 14B.
GIBBON	Harry	Private 26343. 3rd Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. Died 14th March 1916. Son of William and Annie Eliza Gibbon, brother of John William Gibbon. Born c1892 Lazenby, enlisted Redcar and resident Eston, Yorks. Buried in East part of Lythe (St Oswald) Churchyard.
GIBBON	John William	Private 44723. 3rd Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. Died 4th July 1921. Son of William and Annie E Gibbon, brother of Harry Gibbon. Born c1896 Hinderwell, Yorks. Buried in East part of Lythe (St Oswald) Churchyard.
HARLAND	Eustace William	Probationary Flight Officer, Royal Naval Air Service. Died 18th March 1918, aged 18 years. Son of Rev William George Harland, Vicar of Lythe and Clara Elizabeth Harland. Buried in East part of Lythe (St Oswald) Churchyard.
MEAD	Francis Elliott	Private 67597. 1st Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Killed in action 4th April 1917, aged 30 years. Son of (the late) John and Mary Mead of Sleights, Yorks. Husband of Annie Mead of Beach Cottage, Sandsend, Yorks. Born Ugglebarnby and enlisted Whitby, Yorks. No known grave. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 10C, 10D and 11A.
MEAD	William	Private 235488. 6th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment, formerly 306301 Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Killed in action 29th April 1918, aged 30 years. Husband of Jenny Mead of 2 Tiln Road, Retford, Nottinhamshire. Born Lythe, Yorks, enlisted Newark and resident Retford, Nottinhamshire. Buried in Divisional Collecting Post Cemetery and Extension. PHIPPS	Russell Constantine Charles	Gunner 26278. Australian Field Artillery. Died 6th December 1916. Buried in South part of Lythe (St Oswald) Churchyard.
PYBUS	Harry	Possibly Harry Pybus. Private 11434. 6th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. Killed in action Gallipoli 21st August 1915, aged 23 years. Son of Francis and Hannah Pybus of East End, Egton, Yorks. Born Egton, enlisted Whitby and resident Egton, Yorks. No known grave. Commemorated on Helles Memorial. Panel 55 to 58. Probably Harry Pybus. Private 14351. 10th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. Died 27th September 1915. Son of John Thirlwell and Mary Pybus of Clematis Cottage, Sandsend, Yorks. Born and enlisted Whitby, Yorkshire. Buried in Pont-Du-Hem Military Cemetery. Plot V. Row G. Grave 25.
RIPPINGILLE	Frank Alexander	Lieutenant, East Yorkshire Regiment attached 2nd Battalion, West Riding Regiment. Killed in action at Ypres, close to a Chateau, 400 yards north of Menin Road near Veldhoek, 11th November 1914. Son of Frank S Rippingille of Winchester House, Victoria Square, Birmingham, Warwickshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 17, born Sutton Coldfield, a Schoolboy, son of Frank and Floence Ellen Rippingdale, The Cottage, Belwell Lane, Four Oaks S C, Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire. STANFORTH	Thomas	Sergeant 44077, 12th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, formerly 665 West Yorkshire Regiment. Killed in action 5th October 1918, aged 26 years. Son of (the late) George and Jane Stanforth of Riverdale Cottage, Sandsend, Yorks. Born Sandsend, enlisted Leeds and resident Whitby, Yorks. Buried in Houplines Communal Cemetery Extension. Plot II. TAYLOR	[William] Bedlington	[Shown as William B Taylor on internal memorial and appears to be William B Taylor born c1891 at Sandsend, Yorkshire, the son of Richard A and Annie Taylor] Private S850, 'A' Company, 12th (Service) Battalion, Rifle Brigade. Enlisted 3 September 1914 in Poplar, aged 23 years 247 days, a Seaman by trade, born Sands End, Whitby, Yorkshire, height 5 feet 4½ inches, weight 116 lbs, chest 34½-37 inches, fresh complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair, religious denomination Church of England. Discharged 17 October 1914 as being medically unfit due to defective vision under Para 392 (iiic ) King's Regulations.

WALKER	John Henry	Private 30364. 2nd Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. Killed in action 22nd March 1918, aged 40 years. Son of (the late) Thomas and Jane Walker. Husband of Lucy Walker of Hoar Cross, Burton on Trent, Staffordshire. Born Newton Mulgrave, enlisted Whitby and resident Lythe, Yorks. No known grave. Commemorated on Pozieres Memorial. RAWSON	William Lloyd	Sergeant 580595, Royal Air Force. 21 Squadron. Died 9th July 1940, aged 20 years. Son of William and Kate Elizabeth Mary Rawson of Sandsend, Yorkshire. No known grave. Commemorated on Runnymede Memorial. Panel 18.

STONEHOUSE	Wilson Bedlington	Private 483805, Training Reserve, transferred to 54500, 492nd Agriculture Comapny, Labour Corps. Died in a V.A.D. Hospital in Hull from appendicitis and strangulation of the bowels 18th March 1918, aged 38 years. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Stonehouse of Mickleby, Yorks. Born Lythe, Yorks and enlisted West Hartlepool, Durham. In the 1891 census he was aged 11, born Yorkshire, a scholar, son of Robert and Elizabeth Stonehouse, resident Main Street, Ugthorpe, Whitby, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (North Riding). In the 1901 census he was aged 21, born Mickleby, Yorkshire, a Hatter & hosier assistant, son of Elizabeth Stonehouse (a widow), resident 67, Stockton Street, Town, West Hartlepool, Hartlepool, Durham. In the 1911 census he was aged 32, born Lythe, Yorkshire, a Dairyman, son of Elizabeth Stonehouse (a widow), resident 72, Wilson Street, West Hartlepool, West Hartlepool, Durham. Enlisted December 1915 in West Hartlepool, aged 36 years 3½ months, resident 72, Wilson Street, West Hartlepool, unmarried, examined 15 June 1916 and 25 October 1916, a Dairyman, height 5 feet 3¼ inches. weight 120 lbs, chest 33-35 inches, Robert Stonehouse (his brother) was next of kin. Buried 21 March 1918 North of Church in Lythe (St Oswald) Churchyard.
