WOOLPIT INSTITUTE WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Terry Levett, John Wiley & the Woolpit Museum 2009

The Woolpit Institute war memorial is to be found on the outisde wall of the Village Institute, Mill Lane, Woolpit, Suffolk. It takes the form of a plaque. The memorial was first dedicated by everend Canon C.D.A. Lawrence and unveiled by Lieutenant-Colonel W.E. Guinness D.S.O., M.P., 17 July 1920. The memorial was created by Mr A.H. Powell. There are 25 names listed for World War 1 and 6 for World War 2. Although there is no written evidence when Woolpit's War Memorial was erected, there is one clue. In 1920 a Dr. Woods gave a cottage to the village. He actually donated it to the trustees of the Woolpit Institute to which the cottage is attached. A Minute written in December 1920 talks of the alterations to the cottage, of two bay windows and an open porch being added. The cottage was then named the 'Institute Memorial Cottage' and the dates of the First World War are carved above the porch. The War Memorial is on the Institute wall next door. The names here have been sorted into alphabetical order for ease of reading and research.
