WALPOLE WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is to be found within the parish church, Walpole. A brass alms dish is to be found within the church on which is inscribed with 5 names from World War 1 and 4 names from World War 2. It is known that the dish was dedicated on 11th May 1949. The is also a marble plaque within parish church.

Private 267056, 5th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment). Died 16/03/1918. Age 25. Son of George John Aldridge and Eliza Aldridge of Walpole. Buried at Bully-Grenay Communal Cemetery, British Extension

BUTCHER

Herbert John

Private 13741, 11th Battalion, Essex Regiment. Died 10/10/1916. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial

CADY George
Private 9267, 1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Taken POW at the Battle of Frezenberg Ridge and died of wounds a day later 10/05/1915. Resident of Walpole Lane, Walpole. Buried at Roeselare Communal Cemetery West-Vlaanderen, Belgium

WILBY

Percy Charles

Stoker 1st Class C/KX 97139, Royal Navy. HMS Gallant. Died 10/01/1941. Age 21. Son of Jack and Ethel Florence Wilby of Stoke Ferry, Norfolk. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.

The destroyer HMS Gallant was heavily damaged by a mine on 10th January 1941 in the Mediterranean. She was taken in tow and reached Malta, but was then sunk by aircraft on 20th January.
