KILLED IN ACTION

Mr. and Mrs. A. Everitt, North Street, Sudbury, have received official notice of the death of their second son in action in Burma, last month. He was Private Leslie Sidney Everitt and was 24 years of age. He joined the Forces December, 1941, prior to which he had completed his apprenticeship as a bricklayer with Messrs. Wakelin and Rampling of Great Cornard. The Everitt family have long been associated with Trinitv Congregational Church and Leslie was a Sunday School teacher there. On Sunday warm tribute was paid to his memory. Mr. and Mrs. Everitt’s eldest son is in the Azores and the youngest at Brunton's in Sudbury. Sympathy is extended to the bereaved parents, who have received many letters of condolence, which they much appreciate.

SUDBURY AIRMAN
Killed In Flying Accident

Sudburians heard with great regret of the death of Flight-Lt. George Fillmore, D.F.C., son of Mr. M. Fillmore, of "Saxholme," 4, Bacton Road, Felixstowe, and late of Sudbury. Aged 23, this young man was killed in a flying accident over Devon, and much sympathy is felt for the father, who himself is unwell.

The funeral took place at Sudbury Borough Cemetery on Saturday afternoon. In addition to the family mourners there were present representatives from Flt.-Lt. Fillmore’s station, Mr. H. J. Crick, representing Sudbury L.N.E.R., with which Mr. M. Fillmore was formerly employed, and Mr. W. M. Rampling, a personal friend.

Note: 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regiment (Territorial ) – The Cambridgeshire’s - were raised in 1939 and based at Wisbech, part of 18th (East Anglian) Division and spent the first year of the War on defence duties along the Norfolk coast. Following a period of training in Scotland and the Midlands, they embarked from Liverpool on 28th October 1941 to Canada and upon arrival in Newfoundland transferred to a vessel bound for Egypt for service in the Middle East.

However, as a result of Japan's entry into the War, 7 December 1941, the Division was diverted, while at sea, to the Far East.

The 2nd Cambridgeshires arrived in Singapore, after 11 weeks at sea in cramped troop ships and having very limited exercise and fresh air, on 13 January 1941. Thinking they would spend some time training, instead they were rushed off on the 16th to Batu Pahat on the mainland. It was a very small force to try and resist the advance of the Japanese, who by the 22 January had cut them off from all supplies of food or ammunition. On the 23 January orders were received to retire some miles down the road and fight a delaying action. No sooner had they left Batu Pahat when another signal was received, cancelling the first order and they were ordered to retake the town. This was a costly mistake, as the town was now occupied by the Japanese who held the defensive positions that the British had so carefully prepared. The town was reoccupied that night by the 2nd Battalion, assisted by two companies of the 5th Norfolks. The Japanese held on grimly to Hill 127 and were only dislodged by a series of company attacks in the course of which 11 members of the battalion fell that day. Batu Pahat was again abandoned by the British on the 25 January 1942.

HOPES AND FEARS
Of Sudbury Parents

There’s a little wooden cross above the town. It stands in the mllitary section of the Sudbury Borough Cemetery as a temporary commemoration of Gunner George Edwin Seal, who was reported killed by enemy action at sea in the East 5th March, 1942. He was 21 years of age. The cross was erected the War Graves Commission last November. Gunner Seal's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Seal, 81, Ballingdon street, Sudbury, are also mourning the loss of another son, Gunner Reginald Seal, who was killed by an explosion while bathing off the East Coast. He died in Clacton Hospital July, 1943.

Time went on and last Tuesday morning came a surprise in the form of a telegram from George Seal, who has been, mourned dead since March, 1942. The telegram was from Singapore, and dated 8th February, 1942, and addressed to Mrs. Seal. It said; "All well and safe. Please don't worry. Fondest love and kisses—George Seal.”

Accompanying the message was a printed slip trom the Postmaster-General: "In the enclosed telegram, the P.M.G. would like to explain that it is one of a large number which only recently arrived in this country from the Far East. As you will see, it was handed in at Singapore over two years ago, shortly before the fall of the city.”

"I don't know what to think," said Mrs. Seal to the "Free Press.”

Coming as it did, the telegram suggests that George Seal is alive and well, but the fact remains that the report '‘missing, presumed killed," dated a month later. So there is mingled hope and fear in the heart of this Sudbury mother, who has our sympathy in her anxiety.

Tragic Fate of Sudbury Soldier

Mr. and Mrs. A. Seal, 81, Ballingdon Street, Sudbury, last week received news which, has aroused great sympathy for them. Their son, Gunner Reginald Richard Seal, was bathing off the East Coast, when he was killed.

Gunner Seal, who was only 20 years of age, was in the sea with some companions when the tragic event occurred.

Before joining the Army, a year ago, Gunner Seal was employed by Mr. Woods, butcher, Ballingdon.

Another son, Gunner George Edwin Seal. R.A., aged 21. was reported missing, presumed killed, out East in March, 1942.

A POPULAR SOLDIER.

Mrs. Seal has received a letter from her son's commanding officer expressing his sympathy and that of the officers and comrades of deceased. "We are going to miss your son, very much,’’ he wrote. “He had not been with us long, but long enough to show that he was a fine chap and good soldier. He was highly popular with everybody and was always willing and cheerful, and it will be hard to fill his place. It may comfort you to know he lived well and went leaving a record of which his father and mother may be justly proud.”

THE FUNERAL

took place at the Sudbury Borough Cemetery on Monday, the Rev. H. C. Kemp (Baptist Church) officiating. The chief mourners were: Mr. and Mrs. Seal (father and mother), Mrs. Lane (Bromley) and Mrs. Newman (Sudbury), aunts, and Miss Phyllis Palmer (fiancee). Others present were: Mr. Cyril Wood, Mrs. Wood, Mrs. Ridgewell, Miss Eaves, Miss Braybrooke, Mrs. Palmer, Mrs. Cecil, Mrs. Willingdon, and officer and other ranks from deceased’s unit.

Floral tributes were from the relatives and friends and Gunner Seal's Battery.

Mr. T. P. Green had charge of the funeral arrangements.

KILLED ON V.E. DAY
Sad News for Sudbury

Sympathy goes out to the mother and other relatives of Sapper Edmund Frederick Wordley (known as "Derby"), of Cross Street, Sudbury, who, after being prisoner of war for three years, was killed on V.E. Day. The pathetic story was conveyed to his mother, Mrs. Kate Wordley, and his sister, Mrs. Ford, 5, Cross Street, in a letter from a padre, who stated that fighting was going on beween Russians and Germans in the vicinity of the prison camp when Sapper Wordley and three companions were killed by a Russian mortar- bomb. They were buried near the camp.

Sapper Wordley, who was captured in North Africa, spent 18 months in Italy and was then transported to Germany. His camp was Stalag VI. A report of his capture appeared in the "Free Press’’ of June, 1942.

Wordley was apprenticed to Mr. Harry Spencer, East Street, Sudbury, as a plumber and later worked for Mr Jay. In March, 1940, he enlisted for six vears. His relatives heard of his capture through a "Lord Haw-Haw" broadcast.

Warrant Officer 2 Class 24305257, 321 EOD Company, Royal Army Ordnance Corps. Died 8 July 1988. Aged 29, born 9 March 1959, RAOC, killed when he stepped on a pressure plate connected to an IRA booby trap bomb on the Falls Road. He was part of a unit carrying out a follow up examination of the area after an earlier bomb went off killing two people. He was the first member of the bomb squad to be killed since 1981. Commemorated on The Roll of Honour for THE FELIX MEMORIAL GARDEN, THIEPVAL BARRACKS, LISBURN, Co. ANTRIM, Northern Ireland.
