MARTLESHAM WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is in the form of a granite Celtic Cross on a two stepped base outside the parish church. There are 12 names for World War 1 and 13 for World War 2. The memorial was originally dedicated on 14th December 1919 by the Rev. Canon C D Lawrence, the builder was Mr A C Stephenson. Details appeared in the East Anglian Daily Times 14th December 1919.

COLEMAN

Frederick

Corporal 1971, 4th Battalion, Rifle Brigade. Died 21/02/1917. Born Martlesham. Commemorated on the Mikra Memorial, Greece. Within the Mikra British Cemetery will be found the Mikra Memorial, commemorating almost 500 nurses, officers and men of the Commonwealth forces who died when troop transports and hospital ships were lost in the Mediterranean, and who have no grave but the sea. One of these vessels was the Fleet Messenger "Princess Alberta", sunk by mine between Stavros and Mudros on 21 February 1917

Captain, Royal Marines – HM Landing Craft Mechanised 16 (Mark3) H.M.S. Cricketer BUT for D-Day he was part of H.M.S. Turtle Landing Forces, G, E Squadron, 606 Flottila. Died 07/06/1944. Son of Herbert Charles and Alice Beatrice Mary Gooding of Martlesham. Buried at Martlesham (St Mary) Churchyard.

 

HEY

Thomas Charles

Pilot Officer (Pilot) 43169, 64 Squadron, Royal Air Force. Died 01/06/1940. Age 28. Son of Thomas Hey and of Jessie Maude Hey. husband of Margaret Mary Amelia Hey (nee Wray), of Martlesham. Buried at Sage War Cemetery. On the outbreak of war, the squadron was engaged in patrols off the East Coast and in December 1939 provided fighter defence (Blenheims) for the Home Fleet from Evanton for a month. In April 1940, conversion to Spitfires took place in time for the squadron to help cover the evacuation from Dunkirk and later to take part in the Battle of Britain. (However, PO Hey’s death was prior to the Battle of Britain)

Sapper 1944889, 23 Bomb Disposal Company, Royal Engineers. Died 14/03/1941. Age 38. Son of Samuel Charles and Eliza Hollingsworth. husband of Eunice Mary Hollingsworth of Martlesham. Buried at Portsdown (Christ Church) Military Cemetery. Sapper Hollingsworth death was recorded at Portsmouth

MANUEL

George Stephen

Lieutenant 228382, Royal Norfolk Regiment – attached 12th Battalion, Nigeria Regiment, Royal West African Frontier Force (RWAFF). Died 18/04/1944. Age 22. Son of Stephen and Zoe Manuel of Woodbridge. Buried at Taukkyan War Cemetery. In 1944, 12th Battalion, Nigeria Regiment were part of the 3rd Division, Special Force – otherwise known as the 2nd Chindit Expedition 1944 which fought behind the Japanese lines in Burma

MOSS

George Henry

Master, Merchant Navy – SS St Usk. Died 20/09/1943. Age 45. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial. The 5,500 tons freighter ss St Usk was on passage in the South Atlantic at 19 30 S 29 28W; when she was struck by a torpedo and sank. George Moss is also commemorated on the Friston War Memorial

PHILLIPS

Albert Cyril Lauin

Flight Sergeant 1543711, 143 Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 12/12/1943. Commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. 143 Squadron was formed at Aldergrove in June 1941 as a long range fighter unit of Coastal Command, equipped with Beaufighters. In August 1943, the Squadron moved from East Anglia to Cornwall to provide fighter support for anti-aircraft patrols operating over the Bay of Biscay

POOLEY

George John

Private 232716, Pioneer Corps. Died 27/07/1942. Age 35. Son of Robert James Pooley and Annie Louisa Pooley of Martlesham. Buried at Elgin New Cemetery. The cause, or place of Private Pooley’s death is unknown, but believed to be in the Moray area

ROPER

George

Able Seaman C/J 48293, Royal Navy – HMS Blean. Died 11/12/1942. Age 42. Son of Arthur William and Florence Roper. husband of Ann Roper of Martlesham. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. On 11 December 1942, the destroyer HMS Blean was escorting Convoy KMF-4. When west of Oran, Algeria, the convoy came under attack by U-443 and HMS Blean was hit by a torpedo – sinking with the loss of 89 lives

SMITH

Herbert

Sergeant (Wireless Operator/Air Gunner) 908525, 50 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 05/08/1941. Age 20. Son of Albert Herbert and Elsie Smith of Martlesham. Buried at Reichswald Forest War Cemetery. 50 Squadron was formed in May 1937. At the outbreak of the Second World War, the Squadron were flying Hampden bombers and took part in many of the early raids across Germany – including the attack on Berlin

STEVENS

Edward Denys

Flying Officer 74568, 102 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 21/11/1940. Commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. 102 Squadron was formed in 1936 as a heavy bomber squadron and when war was declared it was flying Whitleys. On the second night of the war. 4/5th September 1939. three of its Whitleys dropped propaganda leaflets on the Ruhr. By November 1940, the Squadron had been involved in bombing raids across Germany and even Italy
