He was christened 5 June 1892, in St. Andrew’s Church in Hertford and was unmarried. After the outbreak of war he enlisted in Lowestoft and originally served as 1441, Suffolk Cyclist Battalion. Note: HMS Pathfinder was a Pathfinder Class Scout Cruiser. She was torpedoed by German submarine U-21 near St Abbs Head. A single torpedo hit the forward magazine causing it to explode, Pathfinder sank in 4 minutes. She was the first British warship sunk by a submarine in World War 1.
