his body was not recovered for burial. His next of kin was his wife
Agnes Gallant, formerly Neve, living 18 or 15 Albany Road, Lowestoft.
His name is also on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Panel 19. See also

when it was blown up near Kinsale lighthouse, Southern Ireland 18
February 1917. Born at Wangford, but lived most of his life in Lowestoft.
He married Ellen Nunn, and they had seven children. At the time
of his death, in February 1917, the family were living in Stanford
street. His body was brought back to Lowestoft, for burial. Buried
in LOWESTOFT (BECCLES ROAD) CEMETERY, Suffolk. Plot/Row/Section

SS Sixty Six (Middlesborough), Mercantile Marine. Lost with his
ship when it was torpeded and sunk by a German submarine, whilst
on passage from Middlesborough to London, lost off Scarborough.
The ship shattered and was sunk immediately 29 June 1918. Aged 61.
He was born (1856) and lived in Lowestoft, and was a Master Mariner
up until his death. Husband of Alice Elizabeth Gross, of 13, Salisbury
Rd., Lowestoft. In
1901 he was living at 80, Carlton Road, Kirkley, Suffolk; his father
was a Gardener, born Wrentham, Suffolk circa 1822. No known grave.

Note:
He is also mentioned on the grave headstone of Alice Gross, his
widow, in the Lowestoft Cemetery 'Capt John Gross, beloved husband
of the above, killed by enemy action 29 June 1918'.
Note:
The Sixty Six was a defensively armed British merchant ship. On
29th June 1928 at 2.15am, when 3 miles east from Scarborough,
she spotted a German submarine UB 88 in fog on the surface 500
yards abeam on the port side, steering the same course. The Sixty
Six was on a course parallel to the buoys in the war channel.
She turned to starboard to bring the submarine astern, but within
minutes was struck amidships by a torpedo. The explosion was so
intense that the ship broke up and sunk immediately. The survivors
were thrown into the water. She had a crew of 11, and 6 lives
were lost.
