GALLANT William
Born Lowestoft 21 October 1872. Deck Hand in the Royal Naval Reserve on HM Drifter Kent County, his service number was 900DA (Ch). He was killed or died as a result of enemy action on 8 December 1916, his body was not recovered for burial. His next of kin was his wife Agnes Gallant, formerly Neve, living 18 or 15 Albany Road, Lowestoft. His name is also on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Panel 19. See also Lowestoft St Margaret's
GARROD Edward
Skipper, H.M. Trawler “Clifton”, Royal naval Reserve, a minesweeper, when it was blown up near Kinsale lighthouse, Southern Ireland 18 February 1917. Born at Wangford, but lived most of his life in Lowestoft. He married Ellen Nunn, and they had seven children. At the time of his death, in February 1917, the family were living in Stanford street. He was killed or died by means other than disease, accident or enemy action on 14 May 1917. He was buried in the Churchyard at Carlton Colville, Lowestoft. In the 1911 census he was aged 19, born Sydenham, Surrey, a General Engineer, son of Mrs. M Goodall, resident The Dell, Oulton Broad, Suffolk. As an Engineer, aged 21, ge departed London 27 February 1913 from London bound for Buenos Aires, Argentina aboard the ship Highland Pride; returned from Le Plata, Argentine arriving in London 25 July 1914 on the ship Highland Glen. GROSS John
Mate, SS Sixty Six (Middlesborough), Mercantile Marine. Lost with his ship when it was torpeded and sunk by a German submarine, whilst on passage from Middlesborough to London, lost off Scarborough. The ship shattered and was sunk immediately 29 June 1918. Aged 61. He was born (1856) and lived in Lowestoft, and was a Master Mariner up until his death. Husband of Alice Elizabeth Gross, of 13, Salisbury Rd., Lowestoft. In 1901 he was living at 80, Carlton Road, Kirkley, Suffolk; his father was a Gardener, born Wrentham, Suffolk circa 1822. No known grave. Commemorated on TOWER HILL MEMORIAL, London. See also Lowestoft St Margaret's

Note: He is also mentioned on the grave headstone of Alice Gross, his widow, in the Lowestoft Cemetery 'Capt John Gross, beloved husband of the above, killed by enemy action 29 June 1918'.

Note: The Sixty Six was a defensively armed British merchant ship. On 29th June 1928 at 2.15am, when 3 miles east from Scarborough, she spotted a German submarine UB 88 in fog on the surface 500 yards abeam on the port side, steering the same course. The Sixty Six was on a course parallel to the buoys in the war channel. She turned to starboard to bring the submarine astern, but within minutes was struck amidships by a torpedo. The explosion was so intense that the ship broke up and sunk immediately. The survivors were thrown into the water. She had a crew of 11, and 6 lives were lost.
