KESGRAVE WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

There are two plaques within the lych gate of the parish church, marking the boundary of the churchyard and municipal cemetery, commemorating men from World War 1 and World War 2 who gave their lives. There is 1 name for World War 1 and 9 for World War 2. The plaques were moved to the memorial hall in 1962 when the lych date was vandalised and returned when the hall was demolished in 1990. The memorial hall was orginaly built in 1950. The memorial was unveiled on 5th November 1950.

1914-1918

UPSON

Frederick Frank

Able Seaman Z/3001, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, HMS Pembroke. Died 04/09/1917. Buried at Gillingham (Woodlands) Cemetery. Able Seaman Upson's death is recorded at Medway. HMS Pembroke was the Royal Naval Shore Establishment at Chatham

1939-1945

BELL

Jackson

Private 5833771, 2nd Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment. Died 28/01/1942. Age 21. Commemorated on the Singapore Memorial

CLARKE

Edwin Hugh Basil

Fourth Officer, Merchant Navy, S.S. Umona. Died 30/03/1941. Age 20. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial. On 30th March 1941, the S.S. Umona was on passage from South Africa to London, when a torpedo fired from U-124, 90 miles SW from Freetown, Sierra Leone, hit her. 100 of the 105 crew died in the attack

COOK

Albert W

Special Constable, East Suffolk Police. Died 2nd Quarter 1943. Age 46. Worked on Grange Farm. Believed to be buried in Kesgrave (All Saints) Churchyard. Albert Cook's death was recorded at Ipswich. Albert Cook was killed in a motor accident whilst working as a Special Constable, Cooks Close on the Grange Farm Estate is named after him

Corporal 5832886, 4th Battalion, Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment. Died 06/01/1944. Age 21. Husband of Stella Valerie Gibbs of Ashford, Kent. Buried at Taukkyan War Cemetery

Corporal 6921574, Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. Died 15/04/1945. Age 20. Son of Harry Gibbs and of Mary Gibbs of Kesgrave. Buried at Becklingen War Cemetery

HAMMOND

Douglas James

Private 5829771, 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 07/06/1944. Age 27. Son of Walter James Hammond and Louisa Hammond. Husband of Myrtle Violet Hammond of Tunstall. Buried at Imphal War Cemetery

MASTERSON

Thomas James

Able Seaman C/JX 140934, Royal Navy, HMS Juno. Died 21/05/1941. Age 23. Son of William Free Masterson and Hannah Kate Masterson. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. The destroyer HMS Juno was sunk by enemy aircraft during the Battle of Crete

READ

Victor Sidney

Boy C/JX 182073, Royal Navy, HMS Neptune. Died 19/12/1941. Son of Walter and Daisy Mabel Read of Kesgrave. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. The cruiser HMS Neptune joined the South Atlantic Fleet at the beginning of the war in 1939. The following year she moved to the Mediterranean and East Indies fleet, returning to the Home Fleet in 1941. She was mined near Tripoli, Libya on 19th December 1941 and sank with the loss of 569 of her crew

RUSH

William John

Aircraftman 1st Class 906843, 36 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 20/07/1943. Age 27. Son of William J and Hester Mary Rush of Kesgrave. Buried at El Alia Cemetery. On 1 October 1928, the Coast Defence Torpedo Flight was re-designated 36 Squadron flying Horsleys until it left for Singapore in October 1930. The Squadron was re-equipped with Vildebeests in July 1935 which were still in service when WW2 broke out. The Squadron lost its last aircraft on 7 March 1942 and the Squadron ceased to exist the following day. 36 Squadron was reformed in India on 22 October 1942 and received its first Wellingtons in mid-December. The Squadron was moved to Algeria on 7 June 1943 where detachments operated from various bases on anti-submarine patrols.
