The Hessett war memorial only covers World War 1. It is to be found within the grounds of St Ethelbert's Church, Hessett and takes the form of a Celtic cross with a stone wreath decoration, all standing on a rectangular base. The year of death and the names of the men that fell are listed on the shaft of the cross, there are 14 names listed. The memorial was unveiled by Brigadier-general A L Schreiber 3 October 1920; the builder's were Hanchets. Details appeared in the Bury Free Press 9 October 1920. Within the church is a further Roll of Honour listing the men who served in World War 1 from Hessett, those who died are anotated; the name of John Whiting appears on the memorial but not on the Roll of Honour. The names here have been sorted into alphabetical order for ease of reading and research.

BORLEY	William James	Private 59872, 3rd Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. Died 15 November 1918. Buried South of the church in HESSETT (ST. ETHELBERT) CHURCHYARD, Suffolk.
BULLETT	Bertie	Private 40087, 1st Battalion, Hertfordshire Regiment. Killed in action 9 October 1918. Born and resident Hessett, enlisted Warley, Essex. Son of Mrs. E. Green, of Hall Lane, Hessett, Bury St. Edmund's. Formerly 3655, Essex Regiment. Buried in NAVES COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Nord, France. Plot II. Row D. Grave 16.
BULLETT	Ernest George	Private 50121, 8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action 6 May 1917. Aged 23. Born Hessett, enlisted Bury St Edmunds. Husband of Ethel Mary Catchpole (formerly Bullett), of Brockford Green, Stowmarket, Suffolk. No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 4.
BULLETT	Harry	Private G/15089, 9th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. Killed in action 4 November 1918. Born Hessett, enlisted Bury St Edmunds. Buried in CROSS ROADS CEMETERY, FONTAINE-AU-BOIS, Nord, France. Plot I. Row F. Grave 12.
CATCHPOLE	Ernest	Lance Corporal 201461, 4th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action 26 September 1917. Born Hessett, enlisted Bury St Edmunds. Formerly 4349, Suffolk Regiment. No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 40 to 41 and 162 to 162A.
COCKSEDGE	Bertram	Private 18400, 9th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action 18 September 1918. Born Rougham, Norfolk, enlisted Norwich. No known grave. Commemorated on VIS-EN-ARTOIS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 4.
GLADWELL	Stanley [William]	Private 3/8087, 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action 20 July 1916. Aged 21. Born Hadleigh, Suffolk, enlisted Ipswich. HUBBARD	William	1914. probably William Hubbard, Stoker 1st Class SS/103784, H.M.S. Cressy, Royal Navy. Killed or died as a direct result of enemy action 22 September 1914. Born 10 June 1887 in Bury St Edmunds. Son of Kate Annie Hubbard, of 3, Queens Road, Felixstowe, Suffolk. No known grave. Commemorated on CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, Kent. Panel 5.
PRENTICE	Charles	1918. probably Charles John Prentice, Private 4300, 15th (The King's) Hussars. Killed in action 8 August 1918. Aged 28. Born Old Buckingham, enlisted Bury St Edmunds, resident Great Barton. Son of Henry Prentice, of Church Cottages, Great Barton, Bury St. Edmund'S, Suffolk; husband of Amy Young (formerly Prentice), of 6, Chatteris Rd., New Kent Rd., London. No known grave. STIFF	George	Private 2326, 1/5th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action at Gallipoli 21 August 1915. Aged 20. Enlisted Bury St Edmunds. Son of George and Annie Stiff, of Gedding, Bury St. Edmund's. No known grave. Commemorated on HELLES MEMORIAL, Turkey. Panel 46 and 47.
WHITING	John	Private 13942, "A" Company, 8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died of wounds 7 August 1916. Aged 21. Born Hessett, enlisted Drinkstone. Son of Mrs. Emily Whiting, of The Street, Drinkstone, Bury St. Edmunds. Special Memorial in HESSETT (ST. ETHELBERT) CHURCHYARD, Suffolk.
