The memorial is in the form of a granite obelisk on a layered pediment with a three-stepped base that stands just outside the entrance to St Mary's Church in the arboretum. There are 69 names for World War 1, 18 names for World War 2 and three civilians who died during World War 2; all names are in black lettering. The memorial was first dedicated by Rev H.C Newbery Rector of Halesworth and unveiled by Major R A Parry DSO, of Halesworth, on 6th March 1921, details to be found in the East Anglian Daily Times 8th March 1921.

Within Halesworth United Refordmwed Church, Quay Street, Halesworth are four brass plaques, all mounted on the wooden balustrade in front of pulpit, two list those who died in World War 1 and 2 those who died in World War 2. The names on the World War 1 and World War 2 match thosr on the main memorial except for two from World War 2 who are not on the main memorial. Those on the United Reford Church plaques are marked '†'. The World War 1 plaques were unveiled 9th May 1920 by Rev. W. Tomalin. There are 19 names for World War 1 and 12 for World War 2. Which of the two William WARD's is the correct one for the United Reformed Church is currently unknown.

ADAMSON	Walter Bejamin	[Listed on memorial as W E ADAMSON] Boy 1st Class J/27366, H.M.S. "Hawke," Royal Navy. Lost in the North Sea when his ship was sunk by a German submarine 15th October 1914. Born 6 November 1897 in Halesworth. Son of Florence Caroline Adamson, of 63, London Road, Halesworth, Suffolk. In the 1901 census he was aged 3, born Halesworth, son of Samuel and Caroline F (not the forename reversal) Adamson, resident 19, Chediston Street, Halesworth, Blything, Suffolk. In the 1911 census he was aged 13, born Halesworth, at School, son of Samuel and Florence Adamson, resident 19 Chediston Street, Halesworth, Suffolk. Before enlisted he was a Sack Mender. Enlisted 6 November 1915 for 12 years, height 5 feet 1¼ inches, chest 28½ inches, brown hair, brown eyes, sallow complexion. No known grave. Commemorated on CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, Kent. Panel 3.
ALDRED	Albert Frederick	Private 1803, "F" Company, 4th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action 25th April 1916. Aged 21. Born and enlisted Halesworth. Son of Frederick and Emma Aldred, of 17, Station Rd., Halesworth, Suffolk. Buried in CAMBRIN CHURCHYARD EXTENSION, Pas de Calais, France. Plot/Row/Section E. Grave 18.
ASHFORD	Crcil Harry	Lance Corporal 10138, 9th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died of wounds at the battle of Loos on 26 October 1915. Aged 33. Born Framlingham, enlisted Lowestoft. Hm. Son of Mr. S. Ashford, a jeweller and watchmaker, who later moved to London Road, Halesworth. He had enlisted in the 9th Suffolks soon afe had a twin sister, and for a time lived in Albert Road, Framlinghater war broke out, and was in France by August 1915. Cecil had served an apprenticeship at Premier Press, Halesworth earlier, and worked for Flood & Sons of Lowestoft, known to be quiet and retiring. No known grave. Commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 21. He is also commemorated on the Framlingham War Memorial, where he was born.

NICKER	Edward John	Born 3 July 1897, in Halesworth, son of John Edward and Mary Ann Nicker. Edward became a Typist and Solicitor's office clerk. In the 1911 census he was an office boy resident with his parents at 81 London Road, Halesworth, Suffolk. He enlisted at Stowmarket 30 September 1914 into the 2/6th Cyclists Reserve Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. He served in the Suffolks until November 1917 when he was discharged, having reached the rank of Lance Sergeant (265239). He did not serve abroad, but was admitted to hospital in 1916 with appendicitis. An operation which was followed by bronchitis, he developed double pneumonia after catching a chill whilst on patrol and was again admitted to hospital (Skegness). Discharged 10 November 1917 as physically unfit for duty, Silver Badge B977; he died 22 November 1918, aged 21. He remained single. Buried in HALESWORTH CEMETERY, Suffolk.

Son of Mr Thomas Morris Thomas and his wife Mary, of the Bank House, Thoroughfare, Halesworth, and brother of Edward Morgan Mathias Thomas (below). Educated at Beccles College and afterwards became a Clerk to the Commercial Union Insurance Co. at their Ipswich offices. He worked there 6 years before joining up in July 1916. He was sent to the Salonica Front (Macedonia) with the 1st Suffolk Regt in October 1916. He contracted pneumonia and influenza and died 1st October 1918 in hospital in Salonica. Formerly 23517, Suffolk Regiment. Buried in KIRECHKOI-HORTAKOI MILITARY CEMETERY, Greece. Grave 187.

Son of Rosetta Catchpole. Next of kin Mrs Irene A. Catchpole. of Sunnyside, Lowestoft Road, Roydon, Suffolk. In the 1939 Register he was a Dairyman United Diaries (Wholesale) Ltd, married to Irene, resident 70 London Road,Cowles Yard, Halesworth U.D., Suffolk. No known grave. Commmeorated on SINGAPORE MEMORIAL, Kranji War Cemetery, Singpaore. Column 49. Note: On 21st September 1944 the Hofuku Maru sailed with Convoy MATA-27 for Takao in Formosa. She was attacked by an American aircraft carrier about 80 miles north of Corregidor, the aircraft carrier’s planes sunk the whole fleet including the Hofuku Maru, not knowing she carried prisoners. The Hofuku Maru was carrying 1289 prisoners from Manila to Japan, 1047 were lost.

CIVILIANS KILLED BY ENEMY ACTION Note: On Saturday 18th January 1941 about 15 German Dornier aircraft crossed the coast of East Anglia to bomb airfields. One Dornier jettisoned its 8 high explosive bombs across Halesworth railway installations hitting the station house, booking office, railway track and signal box. Three people were killed and four injured. The Dornier then went on towards the coast.
