BUTCHER

Harry Stanley

Able Seaman J/3004, Royal Navy, HMS Cressy. Died 22/09/1914. Age 22. Son of John and Emma Butcher of Friston. Commemorated on Chatham Naval Memorial. HMS Cressy, an old 1st Class armoured cruiser, was part of Cruiser Force C, in the area of the North Sea known as the Broad Fourteens (HMS Eurylus, HMS Aboukir and HMS Hogue were the other three cruisers). HMS Eurylus had technical problems and returned to port. Early on September 22nd 1914 the German submarine U9 under the command of Commander Otto Weddigen sighted the Cressy, Aboukir and Hogue steaming NNE at 10 knots without zigzagging. Although the patrols were supposed to maintain 12-13 knots and zigzag the old cruisers were unable to maintain that speed and the zigzagging order was widely ignored as there had been no submarines sighted in the area during the war. HMS Aboukir was hit by a torpedo first and rolled over within half an hour of the attack. HMS Hogue was picking up survivors when she was hit by two torpedoes, sinking within 10 minutes. HMS Cressy had stopped to pick up survivors, but got underway, before she was hit by a torpedo and damaged. Shortly afterwards, a second torpedo hit her and she sank within 15 minutes. 837 men were rescued but 1459 men were killed in total

Gerald Royston Jack Heygate

Stoker 1st Class C/KX 89238, Royal Navy, HMS Barham. Died 25/11/1941. Age 25. Son of Mr and Mrs Harry Shipp of Friston. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. On 24th November 1941, Queen Elizabeth, Barham and Valiant, with an escort of eight destroyers, sailed from Alexandria to cover operations against two enemy convoys reported to be making for Benghazi. On the following day, at l6.25 hours, Barham was torpedoed by the German submarine U-331, which, undetected, had penetrated the destroyer screen. The submarine fired four torpedoes, three of which detonated on Barham's port side, between the funnel and 'Y' turret. She quickly listed to port and, after a pause of a few seconds, at an angle of 40 degrees, turned onto her beam ends. Four minutes after the torpedoes had struck, the after 15inch magazines exploded and vented through the upperdeck and the starboard side. 879 Officers and Ratings were lost, although a further 395 were rescued
