CHEDISTON WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The War Memorial is situated at the parish church and takes the form of a Latin cross, made from Portland stone, on a two stepped octagonal. It only commemorates those men who died in World War 1 of which there are 9 names. The memorial was unveiled 1st January 1922 by Major Rodwell. The memorial site cost £27 10s, the builder was Mr Fred Barber. The unveiling was recorded in the Eastn Anglian Daily Times 4th January 1922.

Private 53230, 46th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps. Died 28/04/1918. Born Peasenhall. Buried at Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension

CHAPMAN

Frank Edward

Private 15074, 11th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 17/06/1917. Son of J Chapman of Packway Farm, Chediston. Buried at Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun

CLARKE

Ernest

Sergeant 42988, 41st Battalion, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Died 07/10/1918. Age 30. Husband of Ethel Clarke of "Belle Vue", Cratfield. Buried at Aeroplane Cemetery

CONSTANCE

Frederick James

Deck Hand 5976/DA, Royal Naval Reserve. HM Trawler Coltman. Died 11/10/1918. Age 41. Son of Mrs. Hannah Constance of Chediston Green. Buried at Taranto Town Cemetery Extension. HM Trawler Coltman, based in the Mediterranean, does not appear to have been lost at sea, therefore Deck Hand Constance’s death was either a result of a minor military skirmish, accident or illness

Believed to be Private 12881, 1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 20/04/1915. Born Laxfield. Buried at Bedford House Cemetery. Enclosure No 4
