BREDFIELD WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is in the form of a stone cross situated within grounds of the parish church of St Andrew’s in The Street, Bredfield. The memorial lists those who laid down their lives during World War 1, with the names of the World War 2 fallen added at a later date. There is no mention of casualties from other conflicts (Malaya, Korea, etc). The World War 1 memorial was both unveiled by Brigadier General S E Massy-Lloyd and dedicated by Rev L.G. Pollard, Rector of Bredfield 25 July 1920.

Names are recorded in full on the World War 1 roll of honour; middle name by initial only for World War 2 casualties. There are no details of branch of service, or dates of death for either group. Beneath this dedication are listed the WWII casualties: The WWI fallen are listed on panels to the left and right.

William John

Able Seaman R/1071 Drake Battalion, Royal Naval Division, who was killed in actionHome town Bredfield. in Northern France on 8 October 1918. He is buried in Anneux British Cemetery.

BRANCH

Herbert

Corporal 12985 2nd Battalion, (SDGW) or 8th Battalion, (CWGC) Suffolk Regt, who was killed in action in France & Flanders on 31 July 1917. He has no known grave, but is commemorated with honour on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres. Cpl Branch was born in Nacton and enlisted in Ipswich.

HOLLINGSWORTH

Charles James

Private 26822 11th Battalion, Suffolk Regt, who was killed in action in France & Flanders on 19 April 1918. (The CWGC Register says between 9th and 19th April). He has no known grave, but is commemorated with honour on the Ploegsteert Memorial. Pte Hollingsworth was born in Claydon and enlisted in Bury St Edmunds.

Frederick John

Private 43879 (formerly 4578) 11th Battalion, Suffolk Regt, who was killed in action in France & Flanders on 19 April 1918. He is buried in the Suffolk Cemetery, La Rolanderie Farm. Pte Hollingsworth was born in Claydon and enlisted in Woodbridge.

Walter Samuel

Lance Serjeant 43144 (formerly 998) 7th Battalion, Suffolk Regt, who was killed in action in France & Flanders on 12 October 1916. He is buried in the Grevilliers British Cemetery. L/Sjt Hollingsworth enlisted in Ipswich.

LYON

Alfred

Private G/14624 10th Battalion, Queens Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment, who was killed in action in France & Flanders on 9 October 1916. He has no known grave, but is commemorated with honour on the Thiepval Memorial. Pte Lyon was born in Bredfield and enlisted in Woodbridge.

PULHAM

George William

Private 20726 9th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, who died aged 40 on 4 October 1916. He is buried in the churchyard under a CWGC headstone with the dedication “Thy Will Be Done”. He was the son of William Whayman and Matilda Pulham of Dallinghoo, Wickham Market and the husband of May Pulham of Bredfield. There is no entry for Pte Pulham in SDGW.

REVELL

Private 43517, 11th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment formerly 26780, Essex Regiment. Killed in action 24 March 1917. Aged 28. Born Bredfield, Suffolk, enlisted Southend-On-Sea. Son of Sarah Revell, of Bredfield, Woodbridge, Suffolk, and the late Thomas Revell. Buried in Faubourg D'amiens Cemetery, Arras, France. Plot III. Row J. Grave 28.

Private 4115 1st Battalion, Norfolk Regiment, who was killed in action in France & Flanders on 25 October 1914 He has no known grave, but is commemorated with honour on the Le Touret Memorial. Pte Rudd was born in Kelsale and enlisted in Ipswich.

Robert Henry

Private 202022 (formerly 4544) 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, who was killed in action in France & Flanders on 18 June 1917. He has no known grave, but is commemorated with honour on the Arras Memorial. Pte Rudd was born in Pettistree and enlisted in Ipswich.

Cyril Robert

Trooper 2959 1st Life Guards (Household Cavalry), who was killed in action aged 20 in France & Flanders on 20 November 1914. He is buried in Sanctuary Wood Cemetery. Trpr Spoor was born in St Johns (Suffolk) and enlisted in Ipswich. He was the son of Mr & Mrs H Spoor of 26 Barrack Rd, Woodbridge.

WARNER

Lester

Believed to be: Private 202827 (formerly 6152) Lister Horace Warner, 11th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, who died of wounds in France & Flanders on 5 September 1917. He is buried in the St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen. Pte Warner was born in Hoo and enlisted in Ipswich.

WORLEDGE

Frederick

Private 32204 Frederick Worledge, 11th Battalion, Essex Regiment, who was killed in action aged 33 in France & Flanders on 22 April 1917. He has no known grave, but is commemorated with honour on the Loos Memorial. Pte Worledge was born in Martlesham, enlisted in Warley and resided in Clacton-on-Sea. He was the son of Frederick John and Georgina Worledge, and the husband of Mary Ann Worledge of 3 Council Houses, Bredfield.

1939-45

BANTHORP

Gordon James

Marine PLY/X 100024 HMS Exeter, who died aged 19 on 1 March 1942. He has no known grave, but is commemorated with honour on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. Marine Banthorp was the son of Sidney Arthur William and Lily May Banthorp of Bredfield.

CATTERMOLE

Felix Richard

Private D/30936 6th (HD) Battalion, Suffolk Regt, who died aged 37 on 19 January 1940. He is buried in Woodbridge Cemetery under a CWGC headstone with the dedication “Rest in Peace”. Son of William and Hannah Cattermole, and husband of Annie E Cattermole of Bredfield.

George Herbert

Pilot Officer (Navigator U/T–Under Training?) 139888 RAF Volunteer Reserve, who died aged 24 on 15 May 1943. He is buried in the churchyard under a CWGC. He was the son of Herbert John and Anna Cone of Bredfield and the husband of M Babbette Cone of Farnham, Surrey.

HAYLES

Hugh Ralph

Corporal 6342894 1st Battalion, Suffolk Regt, who died aged 29 on 8 February 1945. He is buried in Belgium in Leopoldsburg War Cemetery. Cpl Hayles was the son of Edwin Andrew and Eunice Mary Hayles of Bredfield.

VIVIAN

Arnold Guy

Lieutenant 6th Battalion, Grenadier Guards, who died aged 28 on 15 September 1943. He is buried in Italy in the Padua War Cemetery. Lt Vivian was the son of Guy Noel and Norah Blanche Vivian of Woodbridge.
