Able Seaman C/JX133842, Royal Navy. HMS Sheffield. Died 27/05/1941. Age 28. Son of Ambrose and Isabella Bertha Ling. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. On 24th May 1941, the Southampton Class cruiser, HMS Sheffield sailed from Gibraltar as part of Force ‘H’ to take part in the destruction of the Bismark. HMS Sheffield sighted the Bismark and came under heavy fire, but maintained contact allowing aircraft from HMS Ark Royal to find and damage Bismark before Royal Navy Destroyers delivered the final blow |

Stoker 1st Class P/KX 103727, Royal Navy. HMS Dunedin. Died 24/11/1941. Age 23. Connection to Blaxhall unknown. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. HMS Dunedin was a light cruiser. In November 1941, she was operating in the Atlantic trying to find and destroy an armed merchant raider (Atlantis) and a U-Boat supply ship (Python). HMS Devonshire found Atlantis in the South Atlantic and sank her. survivors were found in their lifeboats by U-126, which commenced towing them towards South America. Python came to assist, which changed the rendezvous for another U-boat, U-124. While heading for that rendezvous, U-124 sighted HMS Dunedin and fired three torpedoes. two of which hit, causing HMS Dunedin to sink rapidly. An estimated 250 of the total complement of 500 survived the attack, but when they were rescued three days later, only 72 remained alive. of which a further 5 died within days. Stoker Ling was a Bernado’s boy from London, who, when he was in his teens, was placed with a family on a farm at Whychurch, near Malmsbury, Wiltshire. He had an elder brother who lived ‘near London’ who is presumably Ambrose LING |
