The Hanley Boer War Memorial is to be found in Hanley Town Hall, Albion Street, Hanley. It takes the form of a wall mounted wooden frame containing a brass plaque that holds the inscription and the names of the fallen. There are nine names listed, not in alphabetical, order but by rank that have been sorted here into alphabetical order for ease of research and reading.

FREEMAN

Henry John

Corporal, 66th Battery, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action at Colenso 15th December 1899. [Not listed on the Royal Artillery Memorial; the Boer War Casualty Roll 1899-1902 lists him as being a Bombardier (Artillery equivalent to Corporal) 21609, 14th not 66th Battery, missing in action, taken prisoner 15 December 1899, not killed, and later released]

HENSHALL

Herbert

Private 2814, 1st Battalion, King’s Liverpool Regiment. Killed in action at Geluk 23rd August 1900. Buried at Machadodorp.

McLAREN

David [M]

Squadron Sergeant Major 955, 4th Battalion, 6th (Staffordshire) Company, Imperial Yeomanry. Died 21st March 1901, at Bethelhem, of wounds received (28 February 1901) in action received in action at Gagees Kloof. Buried at Tygerskloof, Bethelhem.

RATHBONE

William Albert

Trooper 668, A Division, South African Constabulary. Died at Blerksdorp 25th February 1902 from wounds received in action (23 February 1902) near Bothaville Aged 23. Buried Bothaville.

REEVES

Charles

Private 2651, 2nd Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. Killed in action at Honingspruit 22nd June 1900. Buried in Kroonstad, North Road Cemetery, grave 410.

REGAN

Martin

Corporal, 4th Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment. Died at Netley Hospital 26th July 1902 from Phthisis

SPRATT

George Alfred

Private 2138, 2nd Battalion, Coldstream Guards. Died 17th April 1900 at Bloemfontein from Enteric Fever. Buried in Bloemfotein, President Avenue Cemetery.

TUNNILCIFFE

Frederick Charles

Driver 28844, 79th Battery, Royal Field Artillery. Died at Sterkstoom 20th February 1900 from Enteric Fever, Buried at Strekstroom

WALTON

Joseph

Private 4503, 4th Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment. Died 8th December 1901 at De Aar from Enteric Fever. Buried De Aar Cemetery. Grave 69.
