BALDOCK WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © 2004 - Transcribed & researched
Rosalyn Knight, David Goble & Martin Edwards

The Baldock memorial is in the form of a large plaque on the wall in the memorial gardens. The memorial consist of five panels on the wall plus the nearby gates. The first world war names are listed by Regiment, there are 79 names. There are thirty-four names for the second world war; for ease of use the names have been sorted into alphabetical order for both wars. The memorial was first dedicated and unveiled by the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire in February 1921. The War Memorial has recently undergone a facelift in line with the rest of Baldock Town centre (2009). Two additional wings have since been added to the memorial one on the left and one on the right and names have now been added to these.

LEETE

Sylvia Joan (known as Joan)
Private, ATS. Apparently she came home on leave where she fell ill. Her father refused to let her return to her base, but the Military Police came and fetched her. She went into hospital in Colchester where she died of TB.The GRO list a death in the Jul-Sep 1945 quarter of Sylvia J Leete, aged 25 (Hitchin District Vol. 3a Page 876). This would suggest she died at home and not in Colchester. There are no other entries that match during the war years. New additions to memorial

INGREY

Norman Rex
Able Seaman P/JX 518587 HMS Laforey, Royal Navy. Lost with his ship 30th March 1944. Age 18. Son of Albert Henry & Elsie Renee Ingrey of Baldock, Hertfordshire. Commemorated on PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Panel 84, Column 1.

Note: On 29 March 1944 the German submarine U-223 was located by asdic from the British destroyer HMS Ulster, which was carrying out a routine Anti-Submarine sweep together with two other destroyers of the 14th Flotilla, HMS laforey and HMS Tumult. The U-boat was heavily depth-charged, but managed to carry out evasive manoeuvres in an attempt to evade destruction. In the early morning of 30 March, the U-boat was forced to surface and was attacked by the destroyers with gunfire, which now included the British escort destroyers HMS Hambledon, HMS Blencathra and HMS Wilton, which had replaced HMS Ulster. Shortly before being sunk, U-223 fired a Gnat (missile) and hit HMS Laforey.

His mother never got over the shock and refused to allow his name to go on the memorial. In 2007 the present family asked the newly reformed Baldock Branch Royal British Legion if it would be possible to add his name. RBL approached North Herts District Council who had a plaque made up in very short time, and this was unveiled in a service on 1st July 2007.
