HILDERSHAM WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 and 2 - Rolls of Honour with detailed information

The memorial for Hildersham can be found on the North wall of Holy Trinity Church, High Street, Hildersham. It takes the form of a wall mounted, portrait orientated, nowy-headed World War 1 tablet incorporating in relief, a decorative foliate and floriate border band, which in turn, encloses the main incised inscription and names infilled with black paint. Within the nowy-headed section is a sunburst, super-imposed by a six-sided star design with the stacked letters I H S, all in relief; the Christogram IHS is a monogram symbolizing Jesus Christ. First and last verses of the inscription are across top and bottom borders respectively. Below the World War 1 tablet is a combined World War 2 and Korean wars incised plain tablet, with short inscription,s and a total of four names, enclosed by a single-lined border, all infilled with black paint.

Private 17144 11th Bn., Suffolk Regiment who died in 1st Eastern General Hospital, Cambridge, on Tuesday, 4th December 1917. Born Barnardiston, Suffolk, enlisted Cambridge. According to the memorial and the newspaper he was awarded the Military Medal (M.M.). Buried in HILDERSHAM (HOLY TRINITY) CHURCHYARD at West end of Church.

Private 2707 3rd Bn., Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) who was killed in action on Monday, 3rd May 1915. Age 25. Son of Albert and Jane Day, of Ivy Grove Cottages, Little Shelford, Cambridge. Resident of Hildersham. Commemorated on the YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.

Private G/21284 11th Bn., Middlesex Regiment who died of wounds on Monday, 10th July 1916. Age 18. Son of John and Mary Ann Housden, of Hildersham, Cambridge. Born Edmonton, Mddx., enlisted Mill Hill, Middx. Born Wormley, Herts. Buried in BOUZINCOURT COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.

Private 14828 8th Bn., Suffolk Regiment who was killed in action on Saturday, 19th May 1917. Age 23. Born Hildersham, enlisted Linton. Son of E. A. Swan, of Bottisham, Cambs, and the late Alfred J. Swan. Commemorated on the ARRAS MEMORIAL . Bay 4.
